Desert Zebra

The desert zebra, also known as the Hartmann's mountain zebra, is an extraordinary example of adaptation to harsh environments. Found in the rugged, dry terrains of Namibia and Angola, these zebras have evolved to survive in regions where water is scarce and vegetation is sparse.

With their striking black-and-white striped coats, desert zebras are instantly recognizable. Their patterns help them blend into the shimmering heat waves of their environment, confusing predators like lions and hyenas. Unlike their savanna counterparts, desert zebras have tougher hooves, perfect for navigating rocky landscapes.

These zebras rely on sparse grasses and shrubs for sustenance and are capable of going days without drinking water, thanks to their ability to extract moisture from their food. When resting, they gather in small herds, keeping a watchful eye for predators while enjoying the safety of numbers. Conservation reserves have become critical for protecting these unique zebras from habitat loss and competition with livestock, ensuring their resilience in the face of climate change.
